Uh, oh! I did it!  I said I wouldn’t and I did it!!  I did this dastardly deed when my first love, Bailey Cat, was 15 years old.

I got a new kitten.  I couldn’t help myself.  Maui Boy had been abandoned in the bushes behind the ABC Store.  He was approx. five weeks old, and in much need of a new mommy!  I initially said NOOOOOO.  I couldn’t do this to Bailey Cat.

However, Maui Boy won me over .. big time.  He was so cute!!!

There was no way I could NOT take him home!!  “Bailey will adapt”, I said.  “You know how to train your cat with love”, I told myself. Yeah, right!!

You can imagine the next scenario.  Bailey sniffed at Maui, hissed and disappeared under the bed, where he stayed for the better part of 2-1/2 months except for occasional bites of food and potty trips.  This tiny, fuzzy little thing was definitely a big threat to Bailey’s position of Top Cat.  Bailey didn’t know how to handle it.

Each time Bailey came out, Maui tried to be friends.  Bailey hissed, growled and turned from a laid back, loving, happy cat into a nasty, snarling creature.  He wouldn’t let me pet or cuddle him, he peed on the carpet and throw rugs.  I didn’t even know Bailey anymore!

Bailey, too, was adopted at five weeks old. His mama abandoned him in the Maui cane fields.  Both Bailey and Maui are feral cats .. meaning “born and living outdoors, without any human contact or care”. Their parents were wild feral cats.  Both were too young to be away from mom, had to be bottle fed and were initially afraid of people.  They were prone to biting and scratching.  It’s a built-in protection factor for feral cats.

So here I was .. in a big dilemma .. all of my own doing.  I had lost my best buddy, Bailey Cat.  I had this adorable kitten, Maui Boy, who was totally dependent on me.  Maui wanted love, but was afraid and was prone to erupt, demonstrating his feral cat background.

Bailey and Maui were not showing signs of any compatibility.  Maui constantly tried to be Bailey’s friend.  Bailey continued his awful new personality and wouldn’t let Maui near him.  Our household was in turmoil!!

“Hiss, spit. Get away from me”!!!                            “I said, Stay away”!!!

You can imagine my guilt trip.  WHAT TO DO? WHAT TO DO?  Bailey’s and my world, as we had known it, was turned upside down.  Maui didn’t understand Bailey’s hostility.  I was a basket case!!!

The logical thing would have been to find Maui another home, but I couldn’t do it!  He had totally won my heart.  Above all, I had to stand by Bailey, even with all the peeing on everything, and the snarling, hissing problems that appeared.  After 15 great years together I couldn’t abandon Bailey.  I tried everything I knew.  Nothing worked.  I was tearing out my hair.
